ICAS Founder, Astrid Kaemmerling, Ph.D., is an artist, scholar and educator. She has a Ph.D in Interdisciplinary Arts from Ohio University as well as a B.A. and M.A. in Fine Art and English Education from TU Dortmund University, Germany. Her curiosity in interdisciplinary arts, as well as newly emerging Ph.D. tracks for artists, led her to the School of Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University. Her research focuses on the role and function of walking artists in 21st century urban metropolises. Astrid is devoted to bringing together scholars and artists from various disciplines and has over the past four years participated in collaborative projects that have been exhibited throughout the country. Most recently, Kaemmerling has been awarded an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center, Enos Park and at KALA Art Institute.
ICAS was founded in Fall 2016 after conversations with Astrid’s OHIO colleague Jena Seiler. Together, both set out to formulate the initial community concept. The first conference and gathering of ICAS was organized and hosted by Astrid Kaemmerling in February 2017 in San Francisco with the generous support from Hostelling International, Root Division and Southern Exposure.
